The four papers collected here, originally published as USDA Forest Service Research Paper NC-52 in 1971, report on fieldwork conducted in the Superior National Forest from February 1966 through March 1969. The studies combine aerial tracking, radiotelemetry, and ground examination of wolf-killed deer to examine wolf movements, predation patterns, and the influence of snow conditions. A separate paper investigates whether the Great Plains wolf (Canis lupus nubilus) may have occurred in the region. The research was carried out in both hunted and relatively unhunted areas, allowing comparisons of prey age and sex structure under different levels of human harvest.
Aerial Tracking and Ground Examination
The primary method for locating wolf kills involved flying over frozen lakes in aircraft ranging from an Aeronca Champ to a Cessna 206, at altitudes up to 2,000 feet. Wolves, their tracks, or kills were spotted from the air, and kills were later examined on the ground. During the 1968-69 winter, radiotelemetry on five wolves supplemented aerial searches, increasing discovery of inland kills. On the ground, researchers inspected femur marrow, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, reproductive tracts, and omenta for fat, parasites, and abnormalities, and checked hoofs and lower legs for pathology. Only carcasses with recent wolf sign and no other apparent cause of death were classified as definite wolf-kills; ambiguous cases were labeled “probable.”
Age and Sex Patterns in Wolf-Killed Deer
The analysis of deer killed by wolves employed a more refined aging technique than earlier studies, comparing age and sex structures across subsamples. In Algonquin Park, Ontario, 58 percent of wolf-killed deer were over 5 years old, versus 13 percent in the general population. The Minnesota study extended this approach by examining both a hunted deer population and a relatively unhunted one, and by comparing kills during normal versus unusually high snow accumulations. The incidence of abnormalities in wolf-killed deer was also compared with that in hunter-killed animals.
