The Limits of Fossil Evidence: What the Record Does Not Show
Huxley is careful to note the gaps in the fossil record. He acknowledges that for many groups—especially insects and soft-bodied organisms—the preserved remains are sparse or absent. The 40,000 fossil species, while impressive, represent a fraction of past biodiversity. He also points out that even where persistent types are documented, the absence of change does not disprove evolution; it merely fails to support a particular version of it.
His treatment of the Protozoa is telling: the most ancient Foraminifera are 'exceedingly like those which now exist,' and none are 'simpler, more embryonic, or less differentiated' than modern forms. This observation undercuts the expectation that older fossils should be more primitive. Huxley uses such counterexamples to challenge linear narratives of progress.
