Thomas Henry Huxley opens this lecture by reminding his audience that in the previous five talks he has presented facts and reasoning that form the data for all theories about organic nature. He notes that while he has frequently quoted Darwin, it has been on matters of fact, not on theoretical points. Huxley then clarifies that Darwin's work does not address the origin of life itself, but rather assumes organic matter already exists and seeks to explain how species are modified and perpetuated. This framing sets the stage for a rigorous evaluation of Darwin's hypothesis against three tests: whether it explains the facts, whether it conflicts with any facts, and whether other causes are competent to explain the phenomena.
Darwin's Limited Scope and the Two Problems
Huxley draws a sharp distinction between two problems: the origination of living beings and the modification of existing ones. He states that Darwin does not touch the first question at all, but instead takes the creation of organic matter as given. This is a crucial point because it limits the scope of Darwin's theory to the second problem. Huxley emphasizes that this is a perfectly legitimate proposition, and that Darwin's aim is to show how known laws and properties of organic matter and its environment must have produced the states of organic nature we see. The Capriciousness of Sterility and Hybrids

He cites a remarkable example of two kinds of seaweed where the male of one fertilizes the female of the other, but not vice versa, leading to contradictory conclusions about whether they are varieties or species. He warns against confusing a fact that is not yet explained with one that outright contradicts a hypothesis, and concludes that Darwin's view is in the same position as many other hypotheses on this point.
Darwinism or Nothing: The Third Test
Huxley applies the third test: whether no other known causes are competent to explain the phenomena. He asserts that the alternative is either Darwinism or nothing, as no other rational theory of the organic universe has any scientific standing. He dismisses the Lamarckian hypothesis, noting that while Lamarck argued from a true cause—modification through use and disuse—his explanation for the origin of species is insufficient. Huxley uses the example of short-legged birds becoming long-legged waders by desiring to keep their bodies dry, a notion he finds implausible. He concludes that Darwin's view has far more evidence in its favor than any competing proposition, and that all other theories are effectively out of court.
Huxley's lecture offers a model of scientific criticism: he separates Darwin's actual claims from popular misconceptions, tests them against evidence, and compares them with alternatives.
